About Uniquely Paws-Able

We all think our own dogs are super special - and I'm no exception.  Uniquely Paws-Able is a school for the exceptional dog, and their people!

Does your dog find parts of life challenging?  Have you tried working with other trainers?  Tried different training methods, and maybe even a variety of tools, and still find dealing with some of your dog's behaviors to be challenging?

Or perhaps your dog has some extra needs - they're sensitive to things going on in the world around them, or perhaps, like some of my dogs, they are blind and/or deaf?

When I adopted my first blind and deaf dog, I realized there wasn't good quality information available to support my dogs in their learning.  So - I created one!  Since then, I've grown in my areas of expertise, and have found that many people seeking help are not finding the answers they're looking for.

This is that place.  I know life can seem small when you're living with a dog with special care and training needs.  You don't need to feel alone.

This is a safe place where I am ready to support you and your dog with finding behavior and life solutions that work for both of you!  Whether you're looking for relief from an ongoing and frustrating behavior challenge, or you want to connect with others and find fun activities for you and your dog to do together - Uniquely Paws-Able has what you need!

If you're not sure where to start, let's schedule a call so we can explore that together.

My Areas of Expertise

  • Blind, Deaf, and Blind/Deaf Dogs
  • Compulsive, Repetitive Behaviors (spinning, shadow chasing, etc)
  • Reactive Behaviors (lunging, barking, defensive, fear, anxiety)
  • Canine Sensory Processing Sensitivity (having a hard time coping with sensory input - touch, sounds, smells, movement, etc)

Your Dog Deserves the Best

My passion is helping those dogs who need extra support to live full and happy lives.  Without help and adaptations, they may miss out on living life to the fullest.

It can be hard to know exactly the right ways to care for and teach our special dogs in order to bring out their best potential.  Sometimes we struggle with their behaviors.  I know what that's like.

When I adopted Delight (blind and deaf), I had hoped for a cuddly, happy puppy who was playful and confident in the world.  What I brought home was not what I expected.

From a very young age, it was obvious that she wasn't the average puppy.  Everything seemed to cause a big over-blown reaction ... the weather changing, being touched or groomed, wearing her harness, a different smell in the air ... the list went on and on.

When she got amped up, it took her a very long time to calm back down, and in the meantime, it was as though she was in a frenzy - racing all over the place, barking, biting skin and clothing.

In addition, she spent a big part of her awake hours showing repetitive behaviors like spinning, excessive licking of surfaces, and biting herself. She guarded her food with a vengeance!

It was truly exhausting, confusing, and frustrating trying to deal with her behaviors, interrupt and redirect her, and try to find solutions.  This is why I'm so invested in helping you with your dog.  From a personal perspective, I know what it's like.  From a professional perspective, I know how to help you and your dog find relief.

Today, Delight and I have found that loving, trusting relationship I had hoped to have with her.  I have found adaptations and techniques which work to help her feel safe and confident, which allow her to live a calmer life full of fun adventures with me.

I want that for you too.  We don't bring a dog into our homes to feel exhausted, confused or frustrated. We want to enjoy life with our dogs, have fun adventures, and live together with ease - not stress or disappointment.

I can help you get started today toward that confident ease you want to feel with your dog.  Schedule a call so we can talk more and set up the right next steps for you and your dog.

What People Are Saying

"I can't tell you how much I appreciate all your valuable advice - it really gave me a different perspective on Frankie's world and will definitely help me to help him."

Emily

"Training with Deb has been such a game-changer for us and our dog, Louis. Our primary goal was to diminish Louis reactive behaviors, especially around other dogs, but with Deb’s help, we’ve seen improvement. She’s super knowledgeable, easy to work with, and really “gets” dogs. We’re also working on his recall now and seeing progress. Couldn’t recommend Deb more—she’s amazing!"

Stacy and Ben

"Deb’s knowledge and experience of living with, and training, blind, deaf and blind/deaf dogs is extensive, invaluable and second to none. She is genuinely interested in helping dogs and guardians with the challenges that life together brings and wants to ensure that she can offer the best support and guidance according to individual needs. Deb is kind, generous with her time, innovative, approachable, has a great sense of humour and makes sure that as you learn together you have fun along the way. My dogs and I have achieved things I would not have thought possible until Deb came along. She has not only supported me with my dogs’ needs but through her, I have made connections with like-minded blind, deaf and blind/deaf dog guardians around the world, which is so beneficial too. I would not hesitate to recommend Deb to any dog guardian."
